ETI to explore testing offshore floating wind platform at Wave Hub

The project will see the design, construction and installation of a floating system demonstrator by 2016 at a site with high wind speeds up to about 10 meters per second in water between 60 and 100 meters deep. It will be operated for at least two years to show it can generate high levels of electricity, be maintained without using specially designed vessels and to verify the predicted technical and economic performance.

First pilot license for tidal power project in New York

The project, owned by Verdant Power and known as the Roosevelt Island Tidal Energy (RITE) Project, is 1,050-kilowatts and uses the East River’s natural tidal currents to generate electricity. Turbine generator units are mounted on the riverbed and capture energy from the tidal flow. The pilot license issued to Verdant Power is for 10 years.

“Issuing a pilot license for an innovative technology is a major step in the effort to help our country meet our renewable energy goals,” FERC chairman Jon Wellinghoff said. “FERC’s pilot process is doing what it should: allow for exploration of new renewable technologies while protecting the environment.”

Exelon contracts Nordex for Beebe Community Wind Farm

Statoil and its partner ExxonMobil have made a large gas discovery offshore Tanzania in the first exploration well in Block 2. Last week, Statoil and ExxonMobil said that they had encountered indications of natural gas in the Zafarani exploration well in the Block 2 license offshore Tanzania. The logging results now show that the discovery is a high impact discovery, so far proving up to 5 Tcf of gas in-place.

GE to power China’s largest waste-to-energy facility

“Traditionally, landfill methane as a potent greenhouse gas has been released directly into the air,” said Chen Hongzhang, general manager, Laogang Renewable Energy Co. “By using GE’s gas engines fueled by LFG, we expect to save emissions by over 340,000 tons of carbon dioxide equivalent per year, significantly improving the local environment in Shanghai.”
