Air Products connects new hydrogen plant to ExxonMobil refinery

The Air Products plant uses ExxonMobil refinery's excess gas to produce hydrogen. The refinery uses hydrogen for the desulphurization of oil products and in the manufacture of petrochemicals. The new plant uses the most advanced processes and technologies which makes the hydrogen production considerably more efficient than the previous hydrogen supply to the refinery. The hydrogen plant also delivers steam to the refinery. The synergy in the production processes of the two plants will improve overall energy efficiency by more than 15 percent.

Air Products, together with Technip - its main contractor on the project - began construction of the new hydrogen plant in June 2010. It took approximately one million man-hours to build the plant.

American Transmission, Minnesota Power to link Canadian renewable energy to Midwestern US

Separately, Minnesota Power plans to enhance its transmission infrastructure from Winnipeg to Minnesota’s Mesabi Iron Range. Minnesota Power recently signed a 15-year agreement to purchase 250 megawatts of hydroelectricity from Manitoba Hydro’s proposed 695-MW Keeyask Hydroelectric Plant in Northern Manitoba.

To further facilitate movement of this renewable energy, ATC and Minnesota Power are partnering to develop a proposed 50-mile, double-circuit 345-kilovolt transmission line from the Mesabi Iron Range to the companies’ jointly owned Arrowhead Substation in Duluth, Minnesota, for service in approximately 2020.

In addition, the partners are studying transmission options to strengthen regional electric system reliability and move clean energy from the Arrowhead Substation in Duluth into Wisconsin and Michigan. Total project cost, ownership shares and cost allocation are to be determined yet.

PG&E receives record response for 2011 renewable energy solicitation

"The highly competitive proposals we received offer affordable power to help us achieve the state's renewable energy targets," said Fong Wan, senior vice president for energy procurement at PG&E. "The tremendous response to our request reflects the robust supplies being offered by the renewable energy industry, which California has fostered through its aggressive state mandates."

Since 2002, PG&E has signed more than 110 contracts for about 10,000 megawatts of renewable power. PG&E now expects to be able to meet California's Renewables Portfolio Standard, which requires all retail sellers of electricity to deliver 33 percent of their electricity by 2020 from eligible renewable resources like wind, solar, geothermal, biomass, and small hydroelectric. The utility said it is on track to reach 20 percent this year.

TransCanada reports 2011 comparable earnings of $1.6 billion

Comparable earnings for the year ended December 31, 2011 were $1.565 billion or $2.23 per share compared to $1.361 billion or $1.97 per share in 2010. The increase was primarily due to higher power prices in Alberta and incremental earnings from recently commissioned assets. Partially offsetting these increases were higher interest expenses and lower contributions from Bruce Power, Natural Gas Storage and US Power.
