Element Power-Krafto Vind JV gets environmental permit for Grimsås Wind Farm

Grimsås Wind Farm is expected to reach commercial operation in the second half of 2013. The 13 turbines which comprise the project will generate more than 90GWh of green energy into the Swedish grid each year.

Importantly, the capital investment of more than SEK400million will bring wide-ranging benefits to the local economy during construction and operation including employment, revenues from commercial leases and a local support fund (allocated from the project for the duration of its 25-year operating lifetime), said Element Power.

Mike O’Neill, president and COO of Element Power, said: “We are delighted to have received a permit for the Grimsås project within the first year of our joint venture with Kraftö Vind. This is an encouraging demonstration of an effective joint venture which leverages Element Power’s extensive international experience with Kraftö Vind’s professional skills in leading the local development by working closely with Swedish regional administration and the community.”

Element Power and Kraftö Vind said they are now proactively looking to grow the portfolio as the relationship progresses. It is anticipated that Stenberg (75MW), the next project in the portfolio will receive a decision during 2012 from the Västerbotten County Administration Bureau....

WPL opts to buy Riverside Energy Center from Calpine

The LLC owns Riverside Energy Center, a 600MW combined cycle natural gas-fired electric generating facility located in Beloit, Wisconsin. It began operation in 2004. WPL currently has a purchase power agreement for approximately 500MW from Riverside. Under that agreement, WPL has the option to purchase Riverside if it exercises the option on or before May 31, 2012.

"We exercised our option because we believe purchasing Riverside allows us to better manage our generation fleet to reduce our reliance on market purchases, manage costs for our customers and remain flexible for the future," said John Larsen, president of WPL.

Alstom forms gas turbine reconditioning JV in Vietnam

The joint venture (JV) will be the first reconditioning workshop in the country, and the first in Alstom's network in Asia. The JV is between three parties: Phu My Thermal Power Company, Alstom Asia Pacific and Alstom Vietnam. The objective of the JV is to provide reconditioning services locally to EVN customers and for export under Alstom network. EVN will provide key components while Alstom will contribute technology and other services to increase current activities in Phu My.

The collaboration will bring together the latest technology with local expertise and competitive positioning in a major long-term investment in Vietnam and Asia. The JV is expected to create more than 140 new jobs for skilled Vietnamese workers.

The Hyundai ix35 fuel cell electric vehicle is the European Commission’s official demonstration vehicle to test and promote hydrogen fuel cell technology. Hydrogen fuel cell cars are seen as a step forward from conventional electric vehicles as they emit zero carbon emissions boasting similar levels of performance to petrol and diesel cars.

In vehicles such as the Hyundai ix35 FCEV, the hydrogen is passed through a fuel cell, producing electricity to power the car emitting only water vapor, making it an exceptionally clean fuel.

Hyundai ix35 FCEV can move from 0 to 62 mph in 14 seconds, has a top speed of around 100 mph and can achieve a driving range of 326 miles on a single fuelling – providing more peace of mind on travel distance than the conventional electric vehicle....
